Legend has it that ska only turned into rocksteady because the Summer of 1966 was so darned hot out in Jamaica that dancers couldn't keep up with ska's frenetic tempo any longer. Whether that's true or not, Rocksteady's brief spell as the number one style of Jamaican music is looked back upon fondly by the musicians of the time, todays producers and most importantly, me. It's 50 years this month since Jamaica became an independent nation, it's nearly my birthday, almost carnival time and the Sun has made some occasional attempts to poke it's head through the clouds recently. No further reason needed for this Rocksteady mix, in which you'll recognise the sample sources for countless more recent records, some of the greatest vocalists in Jamaican history and some seriously bubbling basslines. Best served on an afternoon when it's too hot to move, accompanied by a rum and something. Enjoy....
