WHYR Jazz: Gifts & Messages (New Year's warmup) 12/27/2014 Show 147

WHYR Jazz: Gifts & Messages (New Year's warmup) 12/27/2014 Show 147

Chart positions

This show was 1st in the global community radio chart, 1st in the global funky chart, 5th in the global radioshow chart and 13th in the global jazz chart.

It’s our New Year’s Eve warmup show. Playing ‘groovy’ tunes to help you clean house and get ready for your party or just 2015, generally. We have only one tradition here: Rusty Bryant’s ‘Fire Eater’. Then we go back over the year’s playlists and see what got our foot tappin’ or head shakin’. The jazz professor in me has been sent to the bar; just some great foreground or background music to send off 2014 and bring in the New Year. All the best to you for a healthy and rewarding 2015.
Next week, we’ll continue our chronological Horace Silver celebration, begin sharing two new Mosaic box sets (the Dials and live Louis Armstrong), and continue to explore the ‘AM radio hits’ vault.
Be sure to check out The Blueprint on JazzFM (28 Dec show)(you should check it out EVERY week – good music AND good radio, AFTER G&M, of course:); yours truly was the ‘celebrity producer’ for the last hour of Chris Philips’ Blue Note 75 blow-out, playing some of the BNs that make the sun shine for us.

The Soul Preacher

Great compilation! Especially Ronnie Foster working on that Stevie Wonder tune is so to speak WONDER-ful. And that's ONE GOOD laid back cover of "Rock Steady". Thanks for introducing and happy 2015!

Have always loved Rock Steady and thought many times how to turn it into a jazz tune. Wasn't happy with any of my efforts. But Frahm nails it solidly. Best for 2015. Cheers, DrJ

The Soul Preacher

Just for the unlikely case you didn't hear "Rock Steady" by Johnny "Hammond" Smith before. He turned it beautifully into a jazz tune, too; Kudu 04:
