WHYR Jazz: Gifts & Messages 9/6/2014 Show 131

Chart positions

This show was 1st in the global community radio chart, 2nd in the global radioshow chart and 17th in the global jazz chart.

A new month and time to celebrate BN 50th anniversaries of albums recorded in September 1964 from Kenny Dorham, Stanley Turrentine, Jackie McLean, & Grant Green, along with our continuing chronological celebration of Horace Silver (BN trios and a sideman date with Art Farmer). A few other delicious morsels to round out the program. Enjoy the show! Cheers, DrJ

Lol! Didn't mean Van Gelderland. But it's appropriate! Indeed that NJ studio in his home was Van Gelderland!

Love those Nlue Note tributes! Appreciate the fact that you choose to feature lesser known releases. Thanx, Dr.! Van Gelderland created a legacy like no one else in music history except maybe Tom Dowd or Eddie Kramer.

Hey doc, good one. Love 'vanGelderLand'!. I use Chez Van Gelder. Now I've got a 2nd riff! Wait till next week (10/11). We've got a rare Freddie Roach (never on CD so far as I know) and a Kenny Burrell only issued in Japan. As always, thanks for listening. Cheers, DrJ

The Lemon Circus

Joyce from the Bronx got me all 70s crime chasing detective... funky and wonderful, sometimes there no emotions just great music like those perfect pieces from Kenny Dorham - just relaxing background tunes. Ella Fitzgerald makes me wish I had that background music on when I was so much younger, during courtship - just so romantic and classy. Same goes for Dinah Washington but she'd be Ella's support act. Always nice to hear a jamming organ getting rocked on The honeydripper - unique sound nothing else like it. Opus de funk was exactly what it said on the tin - that piano playing was first rate. You should correct the MP3 download services that have incorrectly labeled the artist tracks - someone like me would never be any the wiser :( thanks for the education Dr J, have a great week

Always look forward to your comments because you REALLY listen to the music and 'get it'. Your affection for Ella will always be linked with her in my mind. When I play Ella at home, you always come to mind. 'See' you Wednesday night. DrJ
