WHYR Jazz: Gifts & Messages 9/27/2014 Show 134

Chart positions

This show was 1st in the global swing chart, 2nd in the global community radio chart, 4th in the global radioshow chart and 13th in the global jazz chart.

We’ve got the goods for you: new Jared Gold kicks things off, along with Joe Farrell & recent Warren Wolf; some classic Roy Eldridge with OP & a Benny Goodman duo with just piano; we send the piano player on break & let Kenny Garrett with Joe Henderson, KEH Seigfried & Glenn Ferris (formerly with Zappa) do the talking. Our 2nd hour kicks off with Moody in front of a big band, and then to Birdland with Bu/Horace Silver for our continuing HS celebration. Our back quarter: solo Fats Waller, and then an exploration of Autumn courtesy of Arthur Blythe, Betty Carter and an exquisite rendering of Wisteria from the Steve Kuhn trio. Great music, if I do say so. Cheers, DrJ

"Great minds think a like they say " : Before you made the statement " great music to put your feet up on an Autumn day " I was saying the same thing : I got up @ 5:54 am to turn on the computer check the show : made myself some coffee and went back to bed to dig these comforting tunes : ' "Blues" By Art Blakey had all the right ingredients and "Night In Tunisia " a deep favorite of mine ..whomever performs it : Thanks DOC for resting the body and mind of a weary soul

The Lemon Circus

My 5,000th favorite here on gifts & messages :) you know this show could be described as 'lounge' every week a real relaxed flavor enveloped the proceedings - loving that Hoopin on Sundays, continued through Bara Bara and 427 elegant and classy. Benny Goodman took me a little bit further uptown but just as relaxed, in fact much cozier and personal same venue for Kenny Garrett . Neurock N Roll was the most over engineered to be easily accessible, in fact I'm still not sure on either it's pace or tone, certainly a sorry creature but terrorized my jovial spirits... And you done it again the ups and dowsn of Jazz - here was the UP!!! Great Day, my fave track in this weeks show - what a happy happy tune - gorgeous melody, sumptuous sax and a real shout of joy. uninterupted Art Blakey (you're clearly allowed to have 3 artists back-to-back again on mixcloud) Fats Waller dated, but it didn't matter fitted in to this show like nowhere else. Autumn In New York must have been used in movies - just has that great appeal of what must be good to live in a city like NY (once the song finished I'd want to go back home, but the pleasure of the city is definitely there in notes) nice to have the vocals of Betty Carter again capturing the month in her own way - I'd have made it a bit bouncier as September is full of Birthdays, but I guess she's preparing for the leaves to fall and welcome in winter - now that is a sad thought :( See you in October Dr J.... have a brilliant week

Neurock is abit challenging, but you know that I like to give you something well-played but interesting every once & awhile. Glad you got the Moody spirit. Listen again to the last track (Wisteria), a gem. BC took Sept Song down the dark alley that Weill had in mind; the lyric is about more than the end of the year. 'See' you later in the week & as always, thanks for your ears! Cheers, DrJ

The Groove Point/ Halle Cat
