Playing tracks by

Roland Kirk, Pat Martino, Branford Marsalis, Lorez Alexandria, Kenny Drew/Niels-Henning Orsted Pederson and more.

Who has the hippest chops in the world? It’s our August jazz birthday celebrants, including Mixcloud’s own https://www.mixcloud.com/hallejazzcat/, who often gets a jump on the show (as he did this week!) by listening live at 9 (in the UK) at whyr.org on Saturday nights! Reeds: Rahsann, Branford, Bird, Prez, Benny Carter, and Bobby Watson. Pianists: Basie, Bill Evans, Kenny Drew, and OP. Guitarists Pat Martino, Lenny Breau & Jimmy Raney. Singers Lorez Alexandria & Jimmy Rushing. And (of course) Louis Armstrong (August 4th). Get your streamers, cut the cake, crank it up and celebrate. No hamfat here, only the real deal……..

60% of the tracks on today's show appear on Mixcloud for the 1st time:)

There are many fine jazz channels here on mixcloud , but the yardstick of jazz presentation comes form the Gift & Messages show - delightful / enjoyment - loved the Louis Armstrong segment

Thanks for your kind words. Coming from you, they mean a lot. We work hard to be sure that a listener's time is well-spent, every week. Thanks for listening, and glad you enjoyed our Pops birthday salute. Have a good week and watch out for those hurricanes (tis the season, unfortunately)! Cheers, DrJ

I look out of the office window to the grey skies of London while listening to your show....and the music is bringing me sunshine and warmth! Bless you!

Thanks, Ruth. It really brightens my day when we can do this for listeners like you. Best, DrJ

The Lemon Circus

loved the Slipback track and went down only a slight gear shifting into Emanon - Smoooooth Dr. Stunning Lorez Alexandria track and those instrumentals after seemed to be just missing her vocals. Pennies from heaven - that was a blast from the past :D strange I can hear Dick Van Dyke singing that one. Billie Holiday made me feel Christmassy - just an audio fireplace crackling away with pure warmth. I think the closing This Little Light Of Mine was perfect - strong opener - strong close and in between the music was strong :) also heard a mixclouder giving your show a namecheck, but my cloth ears couldn't work out who it was. Until next time :)

Yeh, I know what you mean about Lady Day. Like a favorite sweater wrapping you in a warm glow. Glad you enjoyed the show. BTW, the top of the hour ID was provided by Ruth Fisher (https://www.mixcloud.com/RuthieNotesandTones/), one of our favorite Mixcloud jazz shows.

The Groove Point/ Halle Cat

Maybe we need a disclaimer? "Good jazz, well-programmed, can be habit forming." Thanks for listening and have a good week. Cheers, DrJ
