WHYR Jazz: Gifts & Messages 7/26/2014 Show 125

Chart positions

This show was 1st in the global funky chart, 2nd in the global community radio chart, 4th in the global radioshow chart and 27th in the global jazz chart.

The number of the week is 5! We look back over shows 111-120 and pick the songs that make our day, as well as listener favorites [via the phone, email (drjazz@whyr.org), and right here on Mixcloud]. Grease, soul, jazz classics old & new, and sensuous sounds from Mingus, McGriff, Eric Reed, Courtney Pine, Jimmy Ponder & Larry Coryell, to name just a handful. Keep the music strong and enjoy the show.

BRAVO BRAVO.... Excellent show .. from the hip bass line and those slick percussion patterns in the openning numbers : I have got some jolly old tunes of which to chop and add to my sample collection... The shoe in with the MR porter tune was like a brief change in the tide ... Man .... That man's voice really rings with emotion .. the melody and pharsing in that tune was diffiicult .. Loved it !! Thanks DOC.. see you next week for aother musical examination

Sunday morning would not be complete unless I've seen your weekly message! In fact, when it gets to be lunch time, and I haven't heard from you, I get worried like some Jewish mother! Porter has definitely 'got it'. Once a decade, if that, someone REALLY special comes along. May he have a long, creative and healthy career. Thanks for listening and have a good week. Cheers, DrJ

Thanks, iCazo! [For those of you who haven't listened to this show yet (why not?:), check the Shirley Horn track to get the message]. Yeh, Gregory Porter is the real deal. I haven't been this excited about a singer since Cassandra Wilson came along (and now, that's a long time ago). I voted for Gregory as Musician Of The Year in the 2014 Downbeat (Magazine) Readers Poll.

The Lemon Circus

Great show Dr J - from Shirley Horn (all DJ's want to be loved :), Etta Jones and yes quickly becoming everyones' favorite Gregory Porter. Carmen McRae stole the show with that track - wonderful stuff. Enjoyed the eclectic range this time, always nice to air those jewels that have shined the most - safe week my friend

The Lemon Circus

Scratch that Claudia Jones - Courtney Pine was the song I liked most - it mixed so well into Carmen's track I got a little lost :) excellent piece of work

You can't lose with either Carmen or Courtney, or the other vocalists. Sorry [sort of :)] that the mix was so good. Glad you enjoyed the show and that you're making new musical 'friends'. Cheers, DrJ
