Playing tracks by
Alvin Queen, Abdullah Ibrahim, Peter Erskine, Andy Hunter, Anton Schwartz and more.
G&M ‘brought to you by the letter A’ for most of our 1st segment: recent music from Alvin Queen, Abdullah Ibrahim, Andy Hunter & Anton Swartz along with Peter Erskine’s new one. We celebrate Pat Metheny as a 2018 recipient of the National Endowment for the Arts ‘Jazz Masters’ Award; the life of Horace Silver with the hard to find Silver ‘N Woods from 1975; the centennials of Ella Fitzgerald & Buddy Rich (singing together on the radio) as well as Ella & Pops on Decca; & classic pre-war Django Reinhardt with Stephane, French trumpeter Philippe Brun, and Dickie Wells. Along the way Art Farmer/Jim Hall, Lennie Tristano & Jimmy Smith.
Enjoy the show, let us hear from you, hit the heart & keep the music strong.
Thanks to this week’s most avid listeners in Tokyo & Wakayama (Japan) and Athens (Greece)
great GREAT show DrJazz!!!!!
Thank you, but with musicians like Metheny, Django, Ella & Horace to work with, how could you miss? Really appreciate your continuing interest in G&M. Best, DrJ
A-ok with me! Nice set Dr Jazz. In addition to the great tunes starting with A (really loved that tune from Alvin Queen to start), I thought the Ella and Django tunes were top notch. Thanks for sharing!
:) I see what you did there........Thanks for listening. That Alvin Queen doesn't break new ground, but it's got 'attitude', as you discovered. Seems like we're both moving up the charts! Quality prevails. BTW, I have your latest offering on my list - finally getting caught up listening with only 30 casts in the queue.......Have a weekend, DrJ
Sounding good in the morning here to the Banana Plantation.
Thanks, Bill. I'm particularly fond of the last segment with Ella, Buddy, Pops & Django. Got your recent shows in my queue; there just are not enough hours in a day for listening. Cheers, DrJ
DrJazz, is in tha house... love the tunes my friend, great energy!!
Thanks, G! Cheers, DrJ
The letter 'A'... now I see it :) Think Like A Mountain smooth and contemplative, or an excuse to drink my tea while it's still hot. Very relaxing. Language of time could have been a movie theme perhaps for a courtroom drama or one where those special type actors tussle around naked - either scenario works for me ;) the first track by Pat not the ... hold on maybe that would work too if I squint my ears. Whisper Not are vibrophones with reverb, but a delightful sound nonetheless. Loved the Horace Silver - Keep on gettin' up just rallied after the subdued first hour but some oomph! into the gathering. Creation another great track. Ella & louis have that warm winters fire feel, even in July. Always seasonal on G&M :)
It's Christmas in July (actually every Saturday afternoon) with G&M:):)!! Thanks for listening. Indeed, there's always a warm glow when Ella & Louis get together. Have a good rest of the week. Glad you caught 'the feelin' with Horace. Cheers, DrJ
No one does Blue Skies like Ella, and Buddy Rich on the drums. Classic!!!!!
To be precise. Sid Catlett plays the drums on that one. Buddy just talks & sings. It is truly classic because it's unrehearsed, spontaneous & it 'works', just like jazz :)! Best, DrJ
Great show Dr. Jazz.
Thanks, Ms. D! Have a great week. Cheers, DrJ
I'm just a Soul Man but I hear JS playing some Fats Waller! Have a great week :-)
A 'deep' Soul Man! Indeed, James Oscar played a Fats Waller tune - from the album Jimmy Smith Plays Fats Waller on BN. Have a fine week, too. Cheers, DrJ
