WHYR Jazz: Gifts & Messages 6/7/2014 Show 118

Chart positions

This show was 1st in the global community radio chart, 3rd in the global radioshow chart and 11th in the global jazz chart.

It’s June and time to celebrate 50th anniversaries of Blue Note recordings from June of 1964: The Way I Feel (John Patton), In Memory Of (Stanley Turrentine), Solid (Grant Green), One Flight Up (Dexter Gordon), Andrew! (Andrew Hill), and Empyrean Isles (Herbie Hancock). Whew, Alfred & Rudy were busy. All are fine recordings and some are classics. Along the way, we also had time for some Pat Martino, Yusef Lateef, Jessica Williams, Monk, Ed Thigpen’s trio and Etta Jones. We’ve got a compare & contrast on George Russell’s Ezz-thetic: along with the composer’s take, we have versions from Max Roach & Grant Green. Enjoy the show; keep the music strong.

BY no shadow of a doubt .. it was the most inspirational two hours all week : to aid me in drafting the last verse of a song for a local soul singer : Lovely show as usual ... Those first four tune got my mind flowing ..especially Sunday In New York ...I think this was the tune where they passed around the baton of the sane staccato line aimlessly .. Love it !!! Missed you last week BOSS .... Hey .. you know what ...? ! thanks to my comment on your last show regarding Courtney Pine ... Our dear brother Dj2tee has allocated a link to one of his mix that showcases MR Pine's contributions.. Isn't great being a Mixclouder and among this special group ..?! I've not listen to it yet, but will definitely be digging It later this week . Nuff Love and Respect Boss-man

Thanks, my friend. It's nice to be missed, but good to be back! Glad that 'brother' 2tee is on the case. He's one of my favorite mixclouders..great sets he puts together. You guys (and gals) are very special, and life would not be the same without you. Best, DrJ

The Lemon Circus

Livingstone Playground was a very imppresionable track full of swagger - liked it indeed, many tunes here full of confidence Ezz-thetic was sure of itself displaying it's tail feathers in fine fashion (and that is both versions). I also like those a little bit unassuming Tanya was mellow and less brash but as equally formed as the louder elements in this set. Etta Jones perfect close :)

Indeed, we try to be the antidote for stress! Kids should almost be done with school, soon anyway. Cheers and glad we could be of service. DrJ

This looks so tasty Doc... One Flight Up is probably my favorite Dex album from his BN period. Its on par with Gettin Around anyhow... I would be torn between the two. Empyrean Isles would be one of my favorite BN sides of all time - a perfect album. OK gettin my cans on and gonna drift into the zone...
