WHYR Jazz: Gifts & Messages 5/9/2015 Show 166

Chart positions

This show was 1st in the global community radio chart, 11th in the global radioshow chart and 18th in the global jazz chart.

Time for 50th anniversary celebrations of classic Blue Notes from May, 1965 by: Pete La Roca, Dexter Gordon & Sam Rivers. We’ve also got piano music from Teddy Wilson, Bud Powell (working out on the same tune), Orrin Evans, and Kenny Barron (with Stan Getz). We celebrate Billy Strayhorn’s 100th with selections from Barney Bigard & Catherine Russell. And throw in some Alex Garnett (from his new one), Elvin Jones (from Heavy Sounds), and Lady Day for good measure. Enjoy the show while I grade student final exams….

The title to the opening track gave me a smile :) like that one just there. there is no greater love was a truly sweet piano track and again on lazy afternoon, not that I don't appreciate when the piano is abused like a drum kit ;) almost punk jazz, but the show had a more composed feel than that although Candu came close - missed a trick with not ending on Catherine Russell, fun with the instruments acting as voices (as they did with adults in the peanuts cartoons) have a great week Dr J :) here have another smile

Thanks as always. Since I wanted to do the centennials set with Russell, I didn't close with that, although I was thinking REAL hard about that choice. When we do the 'hits' show in a few weeks, that Russell track will likely be the caboose!:)

Indeed. Thank's for listening. I am very moved by Ms. Gibson's comment and am wrestling to find the right words to respond. Those are the kind of unsolicited comments we all live for. Yes? Cheers, DrJ

Always love your shows...am at end of 4th year of studying, (1 to go.. yikes). Your shows have accompanied me along the way thus far through essays and exams. I love the way jazz reflects my busy head, and lets it find expression, not in words, but listening, experiencing. My anxiety gets lost and the relentlessness of my mind finds dynamic peace in the music...Its like everything I want to say but don't have to, or need, words for...

Glad to have helped. I was REALLY moved by your comments! When you really listen, as you do, that's what jazz can do for you. It's kept me alive this long and happy to know that the music does the same for you. ONLY 1 year to go; you can do it, and we'll be with you to help as only good music can. Keep in touch. Best wishes, DrJ
