WHYR Jazz: Gifts & Messages 5/30/2015 Show 169

WHYR Jazz: Gifts & Messages 5/30/2015 Show 169

Chart positions

This show was 1st in the global community radio chart, 6th in the global radioshow chart and 18th in the global jazz chart.

The sound of Southern Louisiana spans the globe from Cambridge, Massachusetts to London, as illustrated in our first set. Then we compare Joey Alexander's new take on Giant Steps with the original. Our Horace Silver celebration continues with his sideman work with Milt Jackson, essentially the MJQ w/o John Lewis. A Jazz Times Top50 alto record-of-all-time gets a spotlight, and our last set continues the Strayhorn centennial salute. Along the way, JJ Johnson, Bechet, Herb Ellis, Jelly Roll, Don Byron, Lou Donaldson and Joe Pass make appearances. Enjoy the show and tell yo' friends.

The Soul Preacher

Thanks DrJ. I've heard a lot of Duke Ellington music these days. Live and in the studio. Pee Wee Ellis and Danny Grissett will have an album out this year. It's all about the Ellington songbook and it's going to be fantastic (minor music). I should have bought a ticket seeing and hearing the gentlemen record the music.

And yes! Wailing With Lou! He by the way re-recorded "Caravan" 12 years later on his album "Say It Loud!" which was an aswer to James Brown's album "Say It Loud, I'm Black & I'm Proud" from the same year, 1969. Pee Wee Ellis wrote the song. So the ends of two very different things meet here.

A story that I like: When I saw LD perform live he said to the audience: "This next song is not fusion or confusion music, it's not by David Sanborn." and he started to play "Groovin’ High". Knowing he is one of the best Lou could be a mean man! :-)

Loved your LD story; he's always been outspoken and it's refreshing to hear some genuine personal comments from the players. Looking forward to that Pee Wee on Minor, and enjoyed your Benson comment posted on your site; since he's become famous, he hasn't called me either:) Thanks for listening, DrJ

Milt Jackson triple tracker was superb - I guess that would be my kind of jazz melodic and enchanting - all soothing some nice archived from the vaults too in the second hour - I kept the music strong :)
