WHYR JAZZ: Gifts & Messages 2/2/2019 Show 360

Playing tracks by

Dirty Dozen Brass Band, Nick Finzer, Brian Charette, Victor Gould, Peter Beets and more.

Chart positions

This show was 1st in the global swing chart, 21st in the global jazz chart and 24th in the global funk chart.

Who took the happiness out? Not G&M! A Blue Note 50th anniversary for Larry Young’s ‘Mothership’ – just the one this month; Blue Note 6 from Sidney Bechet; & 3 tracks to start the Art Blakey centennial celebration, including a rare (and powerful) one from ‘Gypsy Folk Tales’. Along the way: the Dirty Dozen Brass Band (it IS the start of Mardi Gras season, ya know); 21st century music from trombonist Nick Finzer, organist Brian Charette, pianists Victor Gould & Peter Beets; a couple of Commodore classics from Lady Day; & Hank Mobley with Grant Green. Enjoy the show, hit the heart and keep the music strong.

Thanks to our most active listeners of the week in: Kagoshima & Chikuma (Japan), Engels (Russian Federation), Kiev (Ukraine) & Brooklyn (NY/US)!

The Lemon Circus

Pounding Heart blues - no longer the apple's but real humans emotions, longing and yearning not for love but just some respite... and along it comes with Summertime, a well-balanced piece of music. Yesterdays was the kind of reflective blues, tranquil and charming. And Hanks closer was a nice hidden gem to the longer-lasting listners, which I had to bow out yesterday, work-related but glad to recap on the happy vibes :) take care and have a safe week Dr. J

Speaking of pounding hearts, it's almost Valentine's Day and our annual Cupid mix is on the boards moments ago. I suspect you'll warm us up in your own special way next week. Always appreciate your dedication to the whole show. It's a shame when work interferes with serious listening:) Have a weekend, DrJ

The Lemon Circus

Blues for the apple, great beats and piano and you could feel for the apple - going to be squashed and turned into cider :) Loft funk helped turn the sugar to alcohol. Visions was the drinking of the refreshing brew itself - cheers!"

Street scenes was wonderful and had it's Mardi Grad moments too. You tipped the spice condiment and the lid fell off and covered the air with Split kick-ing juices - fantastic. Been busy this side of the pond today - will tune back in tomorrow in the am and give it my undivided attention (that's what happens when you do things out of schedule)

Thanks, Kristian. Always a pleasure to have you with us, fireworks or not. Cheers, DrJ

The Soul Preacher

The first track took me back to my visit at Mardi Gras World in New Orleans. I remember that the ticket was a golden beads neckless with the logo of this awesome fun factory. ... Generally great organ grooves, again, not only for Young's ‘Mothership’ ... you gotta love it.

The Soul Preacher

Summertime by Sidney Bechet is such a remarkable version!

And 'Summertime' was the 'B side'! Some things never change, eh? Remember that listener question on 'the Summit'? What's the best invention? An ATM or a B-3? Got to go with the B-3 here. Thanks for listening. Best, DrJ

The Soul Preacher

B-3 is All Things Musical, in other words B-3 includes ATM and that Summertime version still swings its a** off ... :)

Guido's Lounge Café

Superb show, loved it all. That Larry Young release is one I hadnt come across yet. Loved the tunes and went and grabbed a copy at discogs. Thanks for sharing and always turning me on to something new. Cheers!

The two prior Young BNs were a bit uneven, so I'm glad this one is solid. Herbert Morgan (a friend of Young's) sounds better here than on the previous ones. Glad you enjoyed. Best, DrJ
