WHYR Jazz: Gifts & Messages 1/3/2015 Show 148

Chart positions

This show was 1st in the global community radio chart, 8th in the global radioshow chart and 20th in the global jazz chart.

Happy New Year, everyone! Lots of 'deep vault' stuff this week. Santa Jazz was good to me: we have the latest Mosaic boxes of Louis Armstrong concerts AND the Complete Dial Modern Jazz Recordings (Charlie Parker etc.). Both featured here (the DIALS ARE VITAL, showing the transition of swing to bop styles within the 2 tracks), as well as our continuing Horace Silver celebration (with Farmer & Gryce). We explore a couple of jazz numbers that made the Top 40 charts on AM radio in the states. And we’ve got a few saxophonists for good measure: Tia Fuller, Joe Farrell, Lockjaw Davis, Dexter Gordon and Michael Brecker. So, enjoy, tell your friends about the show, and hit the ‘Follow’ button. We thank you for your support! Blue Note anniversaries next week. (FYI: the man with the mike in the photo is DJ Fred Robbins (Robbin's Nest).

Indeed it will be, as we'll continue with our BN 50th anniversaries and birthday salutes each month, our weekly celebration of Horace Silver's life, the surveys of the live Louis Armstrong recordings and the Dial series, as well as our usual 'compare & contrasts', rigorously selected new releases and our rotating classic artist selections. Whew......that's a lot of ground to cover in only 2 hours a week. But we will continue as long as I have breath. Thanks for your support. Cheers, DrJ
