WHYR Jazz: Gifts & Messages 12/6/2014 Show 144

Chart positions

This show was 1st in the global community radio chart, 4th in the global radioshow chart and 20th in the global jazz chart.

Celebrating the 50th anniversary of Blue Note recordings from December 1964: Fuschia Swing Song (Sam Rivers), Speak No Evil (Wayne Shorter), and I’m Tryin’ To Get Home (Donald Byrd). A ‘pop song’ compare & contrast of a Minnie Ripperton classic vs. trumpeter Jason Palmer. And our continuing Horace Silver celebration from 1954 recordings with the Miles Davis Sextet also featuring Lucky Thompson AND JJ Johnson (where Miles play a beat-up dog of a horn because he forgot to bring his own). Along the way we have guitarists Steve Khan, Bill Frisell & John Scofield; Jon Irabagon’s Outright, and pianists Lennie Tristano & Earl Hines.

Always a beautiful show where I learn so much about Jazz, both old and new. You've helped me fall deeper in love with the Blue Note label and inspired my own Blue Note sessions here on mixcloud. Its always a sweet moment when I hear Minnie Riperton and to hear that Jason Palmer version was great. Thanks!
