WHYR JAZZ: Gifts & Messages 1/21/2017 Show 254

Playing tracks by

Wes Montgomery, John McLaughlin, James Carter, JJ Johnson, Henry "Red" Allen and more.

Chart positions

This show was 15th in the global jazz chart.

It’s time for January birthdays on G&M! We’ve got an eclectic mix this year, as well as old standbys.

We salute legendary WRVR broadcaster Ed Beach with his 2 theme songs by Wes Montgomery (Ed was my first mentor in this ‘business’). Guitarists: John McLaughlin, Joe Pass & Django (pre-WWII classics, along with Stephane). Reeds: James Carter, Kenny Davern (a REAL gem). Trumpeters: Red Allen, Hot Lips Page & Kenny Wheeler. Trombonist JJ Johnson; bassists William Parker & Eberhard Weber; vibesmen Gary Burton, Bobby Hutcherson & Milt Jackson.

Enjoy the program, hit the heart & keep the music strong! Next week, it’s one of our G&M ‘hits’ shows.

Shoutouts to our biggest listeners of the week in Tokyo (Japan), Baton Rouge & Athens (Greece)

Indeed it is. No ham fat, no white bread & no wallpaper. Thanks for listening. We're got a new program for you every week, and there's always the archive to explore. Cheers, DrJ

The Tempest

Great show DrJ! Loved the Bobby Hutcherson material. Inner glow is one that I dont have, looking at ebay, not sure Im going to be getting it any time soon :) Cheers and thanks for the Jazz!

That Hutch session is part of the 3-CD "Capitol Vault Series-Bobby Hutcherson". The physical CDs seem to be out-of-print (also the Mosaic version, my source) and are offered used for ca. $75 US. But these can be streamed on Spotify, and an MP3 version is available on the two major music sources I checked for a reasonable price.

Thanks for listening and glad you enjoyed the show. Santa Jazz came late this year to Chez Jazz, but I'm presently listening to the 1945-49 Savoy Sessions on Mosaic, which arrived this afternoon. So much music, so little time. There are a few Bimhuis concerts on MIX that I also need to listen to, and DJ2Tee has a new offering. Whew!

Interesting listen - exposed to artists that I don't normally listen to. I'll tune in for more shows.

The Lemon Circus

All the instruments were present in this show - I was about to call out again xylophone , but it's in whatever collective noun they have in abundance on the closing tune. We were gratified good Doc, the office had the show today and not a bad word was said (neither about you or towards you - and thankfully none to me too :) Hope the Sunday 'put out to pasture' shindig was memorable and no one had been waiting to serve you a piece of their mind. Keep it cordial, that's what I say like the jazz, a bit free with the notes but never disrespectful of the harmony.

Lots of good vibes for you this week. The weekend blow-out was quiet an event. People flew in from all over the US; former students, scientist colleagues, etc. I did give the administration a small piece of MY mind, but 'cordially':) Glad we made the grade at the office this week. Have a good one and thanks for listening. Cheers, DrJ

Thanks, Guido. I'm a bit behind in my own listening. We had a big 'blow-out' weekend with many out-of-town guests for my career retrospective celebration. Have a great week. Cheers, DrJ

Guido's Lounge Café

That sounds like a lot of fun .. I bet you had a great time!

The Soul Preacher

Nice! Especially Kenny Wheeler. His "Eight Plus Three" certainly makes more than eleven. :-)

Indeed. That horn choir doesn't 'swing' in the traditional sense, but it certainly has its own momentum. The ensemble voicings are really rich. Thanks for listening & have a great week. Cheers, DrJ
