Chart positions

This show was 20th in the global funk - soul - jazz chart and 23rd in the global jazz chart.

Three features for you this week. Joey DeFrancesco comes to Baton Rouge on Wednesday November 28th @ the Manship Theatre; we warm up the crowd with DrJ’s request list. Pianist Abdullah Ibrahim is a 2019 NEA Jazz Masters Award winner, and we spotlight his Penguin Guide ‘Core Collection’ recording, Yarona. And we’ve got Charlie Christian with Benny Goodman from the 25th ASCAP anniversary concert @ Carnegie Hall in 1939. Along the way: the Afro-Bop Alliance from D.C., Tom Harrell, Dave Stryker & the UK’s Partisans channeling Miles, guitarist Tal Farlow (a Mixcloud favorite), Lionel Hampton, Jackie McLean, guitarist Kevin Golden & Arthur Blythe. Enjoy the show!

Thanks to our listeners of the week in: Kiev (Ukraine), Paris & Carrieres-sous-Poissy (France), Portland-OR/Chicago (US) & London (UK)!

Digging One Hundred Ways! I would play that song 100 times : )

Now that's an interesting coincidence! When I was corresponding with Joey D, that was my request for last night's concert. And he did it with a DrJ shoutout too! The show was magical. It's been a long time since I viscerally enjoyed a show that much. Thanks for listening. Best, DrJ

The Lemon Circus

Ibrahim's tunes were epic on a scale of epic jazz - it was pointing at the majestic/soaring part of the meter readings. We had a fire alarm drill during that track, I even managed to pause the show, grab my coat before wondering about how my life could be in danger :) Now that's dedication. A great radio show - the best here on Mixcloud, no doubt. Have a fantastic week Dr J

Very special man! BTW, he was "discovered" by Duke Ellington back in the day. Thanks for risking life & limb for G&M. Cheers, DrJ

One sweet letter - the xylos, the xylos - sounded archived 1939???? and yet the crystal clear xylos made it feel produced yesterday.

Indeed. It's amazing what can be done when you combine a good 78 master and today's technology. Vibes madness. Cheers, DrJ

The Lemon Circus

Petticoat High back to my safe space of sultry jazz and piano style. Flying home just was an audio pillow to curl up with :)

Two great guitarists. The lineage chronologically is from Christian to Farlow. Unfortunately, Charlie passed from TB in his 20s. A great loss. Regards, DrJ

The Lemon Circus

Loved Never Can Say Goodbye - funky-tastic!

Yes, yes. See below. Thanks for listening. Cheers, DrJ

A calypso tinge to the intro this week, enjoyable and Va, not a big title but a big breeze of airborne notes. Joey's coming to Baton Rouge - that'll be later today :) sounds like it'll be a fab gig

I can't tell you how much I enjoyed DeFrancesco! The whole band was marvelous. The music moved me to tears of joy. And I think the last time I had that reaction to a live concert was the last time Sonny Rollins played N.O. Jazzfest (and that was a long time ago). AND Joey D played one of my requests to close the show & I got a shoutout from the stage as well. Life is worth living again:) Best, DrJ

Thanks, silvabe. I'm hoping Joey D plays that one live tomorrow night. Cold & crisp here, at least for the moment. Have an excellent week. Best, DrJ

The Soul Preacher

Sounds like you're having an appointment for Wednesday evening and I'm sure you'll find "One Hundred Ways" to enjoy the gig. Have fun!

The Soul Preacher

Hampton’s "Letter" was a highlight, too. Very nice!

We see what you did there:) Looking forward to my appointment. Glad you enjoyed Lionel. What a band too! Best, DrJ

A fabulous show & he played that tune per my request! If you haven't seen the man live, you haven't lived! Cheers, DrJ

The Soul Preacher

Great he heard you and you heard him. I did see Joey live at NYC's Blue Note with guest David Sanborn in 2010. Joey really is a master at the B3. I will meet China Moses with Ian Shaw & Pee Wee Ellis next Sunday; so I have something to really look forward to. It's going to be jazzy :-)
