WHYR Jazz: Gifts & Messages 11/15/2014 Show 141

Chart positions

This show was 1st in the global community radio chart, 2nd in the global funky chart, 7th in the global radioshow chart and 14th in the global jazz chart.

Head shakin’ music from Freddie Hubbard, Gordon Goodwin, Herbie Hancock & John Scofield (courtesy of my ‘distinguished’ colleague, Dr. Second Line Funkenstein) – along with trumpeters Sean Jones, Jukka Escola & Marquis Hill (congrats here - he just won this year's 'Monk'competition!); and pianists Lynne Arriale and Marcus Roberts. A bit of smoky sax from Ike Quebec, & a Jazztet classic. Strings (Lots of ‘em! The whole 4th segment) as we celebrate the 65th anniversary of Charlie Parker With Strings; from the Wes Montgomery box (the Fusion session with strings); and a selection from Ben Webster’s ‘Warm Moods’. But there’s more: 3 rarely heard Art Blakey tracks from his Emarcy sessions with Horace Silver on piano and the very obscure Newark (NJ) saxophonist Henry Durant.

Thank you for telling your new mix! I'm very busy to listen ha ;) Herbie Hancock is my favorite artist! I like his CD 'River :the joni letters '. I don't know if you like it...but, when you have a free time, please check it out!

A good artist to have as a favorite! River is a sweet record. I have it and will play something from it on a future show. Thanks for listening! Cheers, DrJ

The Soul Preacher

Second listen. Loved the vibe on "The Thump". Cool self produced sound. And it's not surprising that I liked "Heavy Soul". That Herbie Hancock tune is a long time companion of mine. I knew it from his CBS compilation "Best Of HH". Would you remmoned his "Man-Child" album? Are these all Funk tracks on there?

I think you'd like 'Man-Child'; the whole album is on Youtube, so you can check it out before you plunk down your cash. My favorites in this bag are the first in the series (Headhunters) and 'Thrust'. But 'Hang Up' is a 'money' track! Glad we could catalyze a 2nd listen. Cheers, DrJ

The Lemon Circus

Howdiz Songo, Hang Up Your Hangups and Pretty Blue all made me picj up my head, but they all made me pick up my ears - first hour bounced away so quickly and the second hour was much a slower pace :) all made perfect listening Dr J thnbaks for your incredible record collection but so much more for your passion to deliver this quality each and every week

Thanks, my friend. Always a joy when listeners recognize how much work goes into these programs (that goes for my hat tip to TLC as well). We have fundraising chores at the station the next couple of evenings. So, listening to tonight's TLC will have to wait for the weekend. Best, DrJ

Wonderful Music doc ... The opening numbers werle like a battle ship : The saxophone and string. segment..simply timeless.. "lost time is never found again they say , but not in the understanding of such recordings

Indeed. I regularly thank our lucky stars for recording technology. How much would be lost to us without it. You'd just read stories about Bird, Trane, Miles etc. and never know the actual sounds. Both musicians and listeners would suffer. Thanks for your ears, as always. Best, DrJ
