WHYR JAZZ: Gifts & Messages 10/1/2016 Show 238

Playing tracks by

Gregory Porter, Avichai Ornoy, Joe Lovano, Fred Hersch, George Benson and more.

Chart positions

This upload was 1st in the #swing chart, 15th in the #r'n'b chart and 27th in the #jazz chart.

We’re everywhere musically this week: Gregory Porter from his debut release a few years ago (you might have missed that one, before he was large). New music from Avichai Ornoy, Jack DeJohnette (for a wicked compare & contrast with EW&F), & Anat Fort. Classic Joe Lovano with Joshua Redman, Fred Hersch, George Benson, Stan Getz/JJ Johnson & Herbie Nichols. We celebrate Horace Silver (selections from ‘Silver’s Serenade’ with Junior Cook/Blue Mitchell) & spotlight the great bassist/cellist Oscar Pettiford. AND we go deep into the vault for classic Sidney Bechet & Fletcher Henderson. We’ll get some ‘free’ jazz in next week. But for now, that’ll cure what ails you:)!

Keep the music strong, hit the heart & enjoy the show.

Shout-outs to our listeners of the week in Okayama/Fukuoka (Japan), Belgrade (Serbia) & Poughkeepsie (NY)!

The Tempest

Really enjoyed the show this week, well I always look forward to your cast but this week hit right. I suppose that's the beauty of music. Right time, right place. Cheers!

Yeah ... we escape the jaws of the hurricane with no damage - by next month it will be all over -Glad you check out the video clip and like it - see you on sunday ; )

The Lemon Circus

Nice track from Mr Porter, but I quite liked Abuyoyo as the opener, real breezy and calm. Knock on wood had those naughty movie soundtrack dirty twangs going on - loved them :) Earth Wind and Fire - wow! tops. Going to check out the 'Down The Road' show after that trailer, check out that gramophone recording by Fletch Henderson absolutely timeless, I've even stayed till well after my shift has finished - listening to free Jazz even before next weeks promised free jazz show. fantastic show Dr J as ever

I played with the starting sequence (I play with all the sequencing), and if I put tracks 1 & 2 together, they had to be in that order. Next thing you know, I'll find a jazz version of the Shaft theme, and then we can really go crazy!:) Always a pleasure to track E,W & F. I may have to carve out some time to do an 'old school' soul & blues mix for Mixcloud. That's why we play Fletch. People know Basie & Duke, maybe; but many people don't know Fletch. Remember that wild Don Cherry track we ran a few weeks ago, we've got the 50th anniversary of Cecil Taylor's Conquistador next week; more of the same. Buckle up!:) Cheers, DrJ
