Playing tracks by
Roland Kirk, Maceo Parker, Ray Anderson, Clarence Penn, Lew Tabackin and more.
Our usual mix of classic modern and vintage tracks from deep in the vault. Starting on the 'good foot' with Maceo Parker and Ray Anderson. We go to hyperdrive with Clarence Penn and Lew Tabackin (I've heard him work out on this tune live for 15 minutes!), giving the piano player a break. Then we bring Joanne Brackeen to the stage, featuring Donald Harrison on alto. We've also got some vintage Bud Freeman, Alberta Hunter. McKinney's Cotton Pickers and Charlie Barnet; big band from Don Ellis, as well as tracks from John Patton (serious grease), Chick Corea's first trio outing with Vitous/Haynes, a taste from Henry Threadgill and Jackie McLean. Also, our semi-regular feature on the Jazz Times musicians poll of the top all time tenor saxophone recordings, this time highlighting two tracks from the Sonny Rollins classic, Saxophone Colossus on Prestige. February birthday salutes coming next week. Pictured: jazz piano legend, educator, and A-1 disc jockey, Dr. Billy Taylor.
