I chose to highlight a short period in pop history: 1978-1980. Inspired by the experiments of 'kraut rock', the open minded climate that followed punk and the availability of affordable synthesisers and recording equipment for the first time, a disparate group of non musicians who neither had the desire or ability to learn the ‘3 chords’ required to make a punk record retired to their bedrooms. What resulted was the first wave of homemade electronic 7 inches, all released by tiny independents or by the artists themselves. By 1981 the music had already gone from the bedroom to Top of the Pops and international recognition. Over the last 30 years the 'democratic' ideals that drove us have become realised; anyone with access to a computer can record and distribute their own music and with that number growing exponentially and globally this is again an incredibly exciting and creative time for electronic music.
