Chart positions

This show was 26th in the global rap chart and 82nd in the global hip hop chart.

Welcome to "Beats & Rhymes" ... So as many of you already know, I love house music, but you may not be aware that I'm also a huge hip hop head ... Growing up in London in the 90's, I spent most of my money on hip hop albums, both on vinyl and CD ... This crate digging habit of mine continued well into the 2000's, so I built up an extensive collection of hip hop albums! ... For this series I will be revisiting some of the hip hop that I grew up listening to in the 90's, and I will also throw in some of the more recent releases from time to time ... But for Volume 1, I'm keeping it strictly 90's. My favourite era for hip hop was from around 1994 to 1997, during the early days of legends such as Mobb Deep and Wu-Tang Clan ... I hope you guys enjoy this brief deviation away from house music ... and rest assured, I'm not abandoning house music 😂 ... I will be back with more house sessions very soon ... For now, let's enjoy some beats and rhymes!! 🎧 ... WARNING ... Contains explicit lyrics

Man, These Youngsters Will Never Understand How Special The 90's Was! Dope Lyrics & Tight Beats, Just That Straight Boom Bap Concrete Sh*t! To Be Honest I'm Long Overdue To For A Classic Hip Hop Set Myself lol. Banging Set Steve!!!🔥🔥🔥

Steve James

You summed it up precisely L-Train!!!! ... Most youngsters these days just cannot understand how real the music was back in the 90's!!!!! .... The beats, the rhymes, the turntablism, graffiti and all that good stuff ... I don't know what all this mumble rap these days is all about 😅😅 ... You'd have to pay me to listen to that stuff!! ... I can't let my ears suffer that garbage!! 😅😅 ... Thanks for checking out the set bro ... I had a feeling you'd enjoy this one! ... Definitely time for another hip hop set from you mate ... take those youngsters to school!!!!! ... Haha thanks for tuning in bro, and have a great weekend! 😎🎧🎵

Loved this Steve, great to hear so many good tracks, and so well put together. It had me reminiscing big time. Yes to more like this please 💯👊 Have a top weekend 😎

Steve James

Cheers Tim ... glad you enjoyed this one!! ... I'd been thinking about putting out some hip hop sets for quite a while, but never actually got round to it ..... It was only by chance that I made this set last week ... I was going through one of my flash drives last weekend and came across some of my old hip hop albums, and after listening to a lot of old mid 90's rap, I was inspired, so I recorded this mix ... I think it took a lot of people by surprise, as pretty much everything on my channel is house music ... so nobody saw this one coming!! 😂😂 ... But surprises are good ...... and as a huge hip hop fan I had so much fun making this session that I decided I will make it a regular feature on my channel ...... I will hopefully have enough time to do a hip hop session once a month ... I will be playing a lot of old tracks like the ones in this set, but I will also try to include some more recent stuff from time to time as well ... While hip hop is a shadow of its former self ... there are still some great underground beat makers and MC's putting out good music that has a 90's flavour to it ... so I look forward to sharing more hip hop sessions, as a nice change from the usual house sets ... Thanks again for listening mate, and I'm glad these old gems brought back some good memories!!! They brought back loads of memories for me too! ... It felt like 1997 all over again hahahaha 😂😂😂 ... Enjoy your weekend! Cheers 😎🎧🎵

Thanks for listening Karl, and I agree ... 1996 was a great year for hip hop!! ... The whole mid nineties era was awesome ... so many great artists during that time!! 😎🎧🎵

...and that's good Steve, something different that I always loved! Like someone else commented, if you made even a 80's set that would be great! :-) Nice day!

Hey Stevo! I was never massively into hip hop in the 90's, so this was a complete learning curve for me. Ironically it was early 80's electro hip hop that gave me the dance music bug, but it had a completely different sound to later hip hop. This was an absolute MASTERCLASS dude....I'm with Ger - love the funky groove running thru this. I also love the way a lot of the artists on here use their vocal skills to enhance the funk of the tracks (hope that makes sense....it did to me! 😆) The mixing on this is sublime too Bro! 👌 Another 10/10 for me + I'm not that into hip hop!! Brilliant! 🎶♥️👏☺

Steve James

Hey Stefado! ... 80's electro hip hop was awesome! It was very upbeat and groovy! ... During the 90's, the tempo slowed down, and hip hop beats became more laid back ... yet the lyrics became more hardcore ... Hahaha ... I had a lot of fun putting this set together ... as I was revisiting a lot of music that I used to listen to back in 1997 / 1998 ..... I will definitely be doing more hip hop sessions ... some will be on the jazzy tip ... and some will be more rugged and raw like this one! ... Thanks again for tuning in bro, and I hope you have a great week ... and hope you're enjoying your break from the decks!!! 😎🎧🎵

DJ Gerard Proudfoot

I have to say, Steve, that this is straight out of leftfield and is a really cool change of pace! I like Hip Hop because a lot of the early stuff sampled heavily from Funk and Soul and I loved the way they used those samples. I'm a Jungle Brothers, Arrested Development, Guru and De La Soul kind of guy but I really like the way this set builds and the way the groove flows! Looking forward to future efforts!

Steve James

Hey Gerard! ... Thanks for tuning in mate, and I'm glad you enjoyed it!!!!! ... 80's and 90's hip hop was all about sampling and re-working old funk and jazz, and creating something even more groovy ... It was a great time for hip hop, as there was so much originality in the music back then ... There's still some good stuff coming out nowadays, but you have to dig deeper to find it ... Oh and Guru was one of my all time favourite rappers ... I have all his Jazzmatazz albums, and I am a huge Gang Starr fan. I have all their albums on vinyl ... It's such a shame that Guru passed away, because he was one of the few artists keeping that jazzy hip hop style alive ... and his passing also meant there were no more new Gang Starr albums ... I also love Pete Rock & CL Smooth, Common, Mos Def, Talib Kweli, KRS One, The Roots and loads more ... there are just too many to mention!!! ... Thanks again for dropping by, and I'm glad you enjoyed the session!! Have a great week! Cheers 😎🎧🎵
