Probably the only good thing (through the eyes of an atheist) religion contributed to mankind must be found within the tons of amazing spiritual and religious songs and hymnes that have been created all over this world: from Indian carnatic music and raga to African and Latin-American voodoo music to Islamic sufi music to Afro-American spirituals and gospels. Not to forget Soeur Sourire!
Also, within the history of jazz, one particular movement referred to as 'spiritual jazz' started to use their musical virtuosity to serve a higher call. Pioneers of this style were a.o. John Coltrane, Albert Ayler, Don Cherry, Alice Coltrane, Pharaohe Sanders, Sun Ra, ...
In this selection you will find both early spiritual music created in the late 60's and early 70's and some contemporary artists. Two of them can be seen this spring in Kunstencentrum De Werf ( ): Azar Lawrence (USA) and Matthew Halsall (UK). Jeroen Van Herzeele has been released on the Belgian W.E.R.F. label.
