World Soup is an hour long live mix I made in 1999 using 8 CD players and a keyboard and featuring excerpts from about 50-60 different albums of world music. Over the course of three nights I practised mixing the track and on the third night I recorded it to my mini disc player. Afterwards when I lay down to listen to the mix at 4am I had what I can only describe as an out of body experience. The first performance of World Soup was in the ambient zone at the legendary 1999-2000 Gathering outdoor dance party in Takaka, New Zealand just before the deluge began. A much abridged version of this track appeared on the Leading a Horse to Water compilation released by Monkey Records in 2001. With hindsight, this was the beginning of DJ Marco Polo although I called myself DJ Lotus at the time.
