The late 1960s & 1970s saw an explosion of creative forces coming together to create politically conscious & forward-thinking music. At the helm were such artists as Weldon Irvine, Lonnie Liston Smith, Harold Alexander, Jayne Cortez, Gil Scott-Heron, Herbie Hancock, The Last Poets, Frank Foster, & Pharaoh Sanders (covered here by the Souljazz Orchestra), amongst others. The sounds explored by these artists, combined with poetry, literature, and political movements at the time have had a lasting impact on both the music & social world of today, with artists such as Kamasi Washington, Miles Mosley, Yussef Kamaal, and many, many more carrying on the legacy. The sounds also formed the bedrock of hip-hop, without which the shape of things today cannot be examined accurately. At once conscious, spiritual, and down-to-earth, these tunes pay tribute to that legacy & its continued influence on the world today.

Thank you N4RW4HL! The studio version is obviously a classic, but I wanted to go a little more off the beaten path here, so I chose the live version. I think it complements the selection well. Thanks for the feedback & for listening! Appreciate it.
