The Document Vol 1 - DJ Andy Smith (FFRR/GO Beat!/Phase 4). Released worldwide in 1998. After I did a DJ set on Bostons' WFNX' radio station after a Portishead show (that I had warmed up for) The US label that was working the current Portishead LP at the time ('Portishead') used a recording of that show to promote the band & LP. It was much bootlegged. The US label (FFRR/Polygram) asked If I would like to do my own mix CD. This became 'Document 1'. I couldn't use all of the tracks from the radio show (Jimi Hendrix & The Beatles were a 'no'). Lalo Schifrin was a yes until the very last minute when they said 'no' (I'm sure nothing to do with Lalo Schifrin himself as when Portishead were touring in LA Geoff Barrow and myself were asked if we wanted to come down to his basement to hear unreleased recordings to sample (but we never went!).The first tune - 'G.B Beats' was an unreleased 'Geoff Barrow' track that never got used as a 'P' track. http://www34.zippyshare.com/v/66WGKSrW/file.html

Just like DJ Shadow and Z-trip, DJ Andy Smith’s holding it down for the white boys like me who grew up during the golden age of Hip Hop. Thanks and much respect

Still remember your warm up set and subsequent gobsmacking DJ from the Portishead gig in Perth in April 1998 (I admit I looked it up on setlist.fm). Such a phenomenal experience - still in my top 5 gigs of all time. Can't remember if the document was already out or I bought it after but so many good memories to this music... now if I could only find my CD copy lying around here somewhere...

This mix absolutely holds up even after all these years. Mr. Smith showing off his skills and creativity. Can't even imagine how many people this must have inspired.

i nicked one of your mixes from this album (love unlimited -> jeep beat collective) for my own dj sets and on the rare occasions i get on the decks, twenty years later, still use it. so i'm sorry for biting your style but also enormous thanks for one of the best mixes of all time you total legend.
