The French Institute in London welcomes Marc Fumaroli for a discussion about the French classical painter Nicolas Poussin and his philosophy of clarity, logic, and order, and favors line over color. Poussin was the leading painter of the classical French Baroque style.
Marc Fumaroli is a French historian and essayist. He was elected to the Académie française in 1995 and later became its director. He is acknowledged for the revival of Rhetoric as field of study of European culture, in a sharp move away from both structuralism and post-modernism. His pioneering work remains 'L'Age de l'Eloquence' (1980), a massive work which redrew the map of rhetorical scholarship across Europe.
