The other night we built a fire to last for a good long while. After it had been burning for some time I began to notice how much more was going on than just the flame. The coals burned stronger and longer than any showy blaze. Once the heat soaked into the surrounding firebrick and hearthstones it began radiating outward providing warmth even when the fire died down. We added new fuel when needed. Sometimes just because. Rarely did the hot heart of the fire not ignite flames anew. Even then only a little bit of coaxing was required. It was warm and good and beautiful . . . and a lot like the love my wife and I share after all these years.
