Despite peaking in the 60s, the Western is still very much alive and well, as evidenced from a number of recent gems, including a few Best Picture winners. Despite maybe not having such a wide appeal, they nearly always have great music, which is no surprise considering the amount of sweeping vistas, dazzling sunsets and frantic horse-riding within. I guess a Western is just another story, but set in a particular time and place - but thanks to Morricone, Bernstein, Moross and a few others, it has a superb sound all to its own. Some of these tracks are so embedded into pop culture that many would be able to whistle them without knowing exactly where they're from, others are less famous, but just as gorgeous. As a fan of moviemusic, I say long live the Western!
