Simul justus et peccator. At the same time saint and sinner. This is one of the hallmarks of Lutheran theology, which isn't new, but taught in Genesis 3, Romans 5, and Matthew 4 - our texts for today. We are 100% sinner all on our own, because Adam lost the fight agains temptation. By our own might also we’d fail in every temptation. But in Christ we’re 100% saint, because He won the victory in every battle in our place. So “sin boldly” because on your own you can’t escape being a sinner, always returning boldly to your heavenly Father in repentance. But rejoice even more boldly in Christ’s victory over your sin. And whenever the devil, the world, or your flesh try to tempt you, remember you have the most powerful weapon against such attacks: the word of God.
