Deville Wood on the Somme was the most famous battle ever fought by South Africans. On The Legion Weekly Show this week not only do we outline the activities during the five days fighting when the three wounded officers and 140 men were relieved, out of the 121 officers and 3,052 men who had taken the wood. Later the need to help the veterans was identified by Field Marshal Earl Haig, General the Rt Hon J.C. Smuts and General Sir H.T. Lukin which led to forming the organisation now known as the South African Legion.
