The merging of the burgeoning rock world of the late 60s and early 70s with jazz is either attributed to Larry Coryell or Miles Davis’s sonic excursions. In the first few years of the new decade Davis specifically produced a range of albums which threw away convention and allowed rock ideas to be played in a jazz context. This set the tone for a “fusion” of jazz and rock where musicians – a lot of them Miles alumni – created new bands which focused their ideas on a new sonic landscape which broke from the hard bop, modal and free improvisational conventions which had dominated the ’60s. Since then bands of all types have embraced jazz music in their work. This show highlights some of the great exponents of jazz rock.
