The Beach Boys and Glen Campbell.
Brian Wilson was the king of surf-rock in the early Sixties, but he wanted to explore music on a deeper level, and also write about things that weren't cars or the beach. The rest of the Beach Boys were happy to stick to the formula that created the hits, but Brian, by then, had had enough. He quit the touring aspect of the band, and soon after, a noticeable progression of self-reflective songs began.
This collection features what I consider the songs that were stepping stones along Brian's journey from surf-rock superstar to introverted genius, commencing with the release of Pet Sounds in 1966. This mix closes with the original version of "Sloop John B" (which was the first Pet Sounds experiment that Brian recorded while the other guys were on the road) and finally, "God Only Knows" with Brian on lead vocals. (Carl sang lead on the released version.)
