This is the first film in the series to actually show characters being sent back in time, and the machine that does it.

Several homages to the 1978 film version of Superman are seen in the film - the lower rotating rings used with the time displacement field is similar to the one used in Superman: The Movie where General Zod, Ursa, and Non were on trial where they were found guilty and sentenced to exile in The Phantom Zone, a school bus which hangs off the edge of the Golden Gate Bridge, and a helicopter falling over the edge of a skyscraper (where the Guardian and the T-3000 are in a shootout where the Guardian pushes the Coast Guard helicopter over the edge of the SFPD helipad).
