Jumping The Gap 1 February 2012
Finding a copy of The Three Pieces 70s soul LP 'The Vibes Of Truth' recently, set the agenda for most of this show, where we also joined dots between the Hi label (where Al Green & recent Sydney-visitor Syl Johnson once cohabited) & the Twinight label which Johnson moved to & has recently resurrected as he hovers in his septuagenarian decade still full of musical energy. Inbetwixt, the second half of the show delivers soul gems like Jimmy Jones' 'Yesterday's Mistakes' (also on Twinight, it's a song that drives me towards tears everytime) & labelmates The Dynamic Tints with 'Be My Lady', as well as more "contemporary" soul by the on-his-way-to-Sydney, Charles Bradley - another man whose spirited performances make it hard to believe his age. Earlier in the show soul was more on a broken tip with folks like Bugz In The Attic, plus a Freak Power flashback with trombonist Ashley Slater on soul-vocal duties. Glad you could "turn on, tune in and..." xx Paris
