Ray Perman is author of 'The Man Who Gave Away His Island' the biography of John Lorne Campbell of Canna who gave the island to the National Trust for Scotland to prevent it becoming a rich man's playground.

A journalist for 30 years in London and Scotland, Ray is now chair of the James Hutton Institute and was formerly chair of WWF Scotland and Social Investman Scotland. He was the Scottish correspondent of the Financial Times when he first met the Campbells in 1977, visiting Canna to cover the story of a fierce battle to protect ferry services to the Small Isles. That began a lasting, often challenging but always stimulating, correspondence with John until his death in 1996.
