May 5th, 2012 would have been Delia Derbyshire's 75th birthday. In an attempt to celebrate this in some way, I've put together an hour's worth of music and speech. Obviously it features a fair amount of Delia's work, and her voice in conversation. However, I've also added in pieces and interviews from some of her colleagues at the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, as well as a few pieces from non-RW composers who were (seemingly, at least) working towards similar goals during the 1950s and '60s.

Also, I've tried to avoid the usual chestnuts which get wheeled out whenever people talk of the Radiophonic Workshop. Yes, some of 'those' tunes appear here, including 'that' one, but mainly because it allows me to include Delia (and Brian Hodgson) talking about them. Elsewhere there's some pretty unusual and unheard stuff. Hopefully there'll be something here to interest even the most hardcore Radiophonic nutcases. Anyway I hope you enjoy it... and happy birthday Delia, wherever you may be.

Thanks for the comment and nice words, Mike! DD's profile is certainly a lot higher now than it ever was while she was alive, and the same can be said for a lot of the other people featured here, sadly. I started noticing this kind of stuff getting on for 30 years ago, when I chanced upon 'An Electric Storm' and '21', and I'm still playing catch up to this day. Perhaps I should have included something from 'Things To Come' in here? Well, if I ever do anything similar again, I'll try and correct that oversight..! It's a great, and great sounding, LP.

Brilliant, Delia is pretty much one of the unsung pioneers of Uk electronic music composition, and in my opinion should be better recognised. Dave Vourhous's studio where White Noise was produced was just down the road in Camden (above the feminist bookshop, if I recall correctly), from Chalk Farm Studios where Ken and I were also doing Music Concrete'/ electronic music compositions together. (Secondhand, Chillum, Seventh Wave).

Ha ha. No need to apologise, especially when you have done a stunning job with the genre. I might do one....trouble is there is unfortunately a limited amount of Delia material. again, great mix. You nailed it.

S_70: sorry mate. You should do one anyway, though. Let me know if it happens... James: this would be the Oramics machine, I take it? I'm hoping to get to London to take a look myself before the end of the year. It's a shame that it'll probably never make a noise again, though...

havent had a chance to listen yet but was in the science museam in london recently and i saw the machine that made all these wonderful sounds bit of amonster compared to what we have available now

Brilliant! Was just thinking about doing a Delia Derbyshire tribute piece, and have found that I've been pipped at the post, but thankfully, very competently and wonderfully.
