This was the first in my series of ongoing quarterly studio mixes. Remaining on a relaxed, yet intensely uplifting mood nearly the whole way through, this mix retains a special place in my memory, as well as in my musical canon, and is one of my proudest efforts to date.
Completed just as the minimal "revolution" was coming into vogue in the D&B scene, this offering remains a snapshot of the kind of emotionally honest, pretense-free music that both exemplifies the characteristics about the genre that first enraptured me and drew me to it, as well as paving the way dialectically for the current generation of work by many of the artists featured in the current fad of hyperminimalism. By the cultural context represented here, it is easy to see why artists like Zero T, Commix, and Calibre have begun experimenting with darker, angrier, and less organic textures and rhythms. I welcome the innovation, but I also challenge those who do not believe there is room for both styles in D&B.
