Walk right back-The Roger Allen Sound
Walk Right Back Reviewed by David Toy~Musician
This selection of well-known songs from a wide range of twentieth century eras and sources (jazz, rock, pop, cinema, etc) demonstrates one undeniable fact: that upon his chosen instrument (the electric guitar) and in the supporting use of digital technology, Roger Allen is the consummate musician. Each number is faultlessly executed and, within limits, is well developed by electronic means using techniques in which Roger Allen is expert.
The entire range of tracks is entertaining in the extreme but, if fault there be, it is in lack of variety. One wishes for escape from a sense of sameness. One wishes for more change of tempo and more up-to-date use of harmonic structure and melody:
in other words more improvisation and a wider use of devices like interesting substitute chords.
All in all, Roger Allen’s disc is most enjoyable. It may be classed as ‘easy listening’: music that relaxes, rather than music that galvanises.
