Where next for sustainable development after Rio+20?
By IDS (UK)
The United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, also known as Rio+20, ended on Friday 22 June with an agreement that is being been widely critised as containing nothing of substance to protect our planet’s natural resources from climate change and globalization. This begs the question, “What next?”
We asked IDS Fellows Matthew Lockwood and Melissa Leach what they thought of the Rio+20 process, the outcome document, and where we go next for sustainable development after Rio+20.
Matthew Lockwood is Team Leader of the IDS Climate Change Team. Melissa Leach is Director of the IDS-coordinated STEPS Centre and was a Participant in the Secretary-General’s High-level Panel on Global Sustainability – The Future We Choose.
