Procol Harum's classic hit A Whiter Shade Of Pale is the most played record ever: 'The People's Choice' and 'PPL's Number 1 Record Of The Past 75 Years’ (14.04.09.) Pale's enigmatic lyrics and haunting Bach-like theme defined 'The Summer Of Love' in 1967. It has since become an alternate wedding theme; a funeral march; a TV advert for Toilet Paper; and a musical motif in countless movies. There are 1,000 covers by artistes as diverse as Percy Sledge, King Curtis, Willie Nelson, Annie Lennox, and Joe Cocker. Recently centre stage in a litigation case, Procol's organist Matthew Fisher claimed and won co-composer accreditation, in one what turned out to be one of the longest, costliest and most bitterly fought legal cases in British music history.
