Descrive una categoria di musica, arte visiva, moda, e cultura associata originariamente con gli anni 1960s, hippie, e i dintorni di Haight-Ashbury di San Francisco, California. Ebbe inizio nel 1966, ma un vero slancio lo raggiunse nel 1967 con la Summer of Love. I suoi inizi sono associati con la città di San Francisco ma lo stile si espanse in tutti gli U.S.A., e poi mondialmente.
