Justice target nowhere to be seen at COAG
A separate target to tackle the high number of Indigenous people in jail was expected to be discussed at last week’s Council of Australian Governments meeting, but was nowhere to be found. Indigenous Justice Groups wanted to see a justice target set alongside the other focus areas of the Closing the Gap Reform, which include health care and education.
Indigenous people are imprisoned at a rate 14 times higher than non-Indigenous people. While a justice target would be useful, some justice groups say community programs are needed to get to the core of the problem. (Image by dylaphant07 on Flickr)
