Shanghai On Air: DJ Mr Tsang
Text by Sam Jacobs of Jellymon
I discovered DJ Mr Tsang down a dingy back street in Shanghai, although slightly downtrodden, it's quite a famous street known for it's unusual and delicious street food. He was working in his family's restaurant at the time, occasionally frying up some of their famous Husband and Wife's Pig Lung Noodles. The unusual thing about this food street is that every Friday, DJ Mr Tsang would entertain guests, not with his famous table side chat, but with his beat juggling and scratching delivered via an impromptu sound system incorporating two turntables, a mixer and a microphone.
What struck me most about this young talented beat chef was his incorporation of traditional Chinese elements such as Chinese Opera, Canto Pop and Tibetan Throat Singing alongside street sounds from Shanghai.
