Occupy Wall Street Radio 12.27.2012

Guests: Susan Shin, Staff Attorney with the Neighborhood Economic Development Advocacy Project (www.nedap.org) and Pamela Brown, activist with Strike Debt (www.strikedebt.org)
We talk about the predatory nature of the debt collection system, and ways to fight back. Beginning with the story of a breast cancer survivor who was thrown in jail for a $280 debt she didn't even know she had to pay... and, in fact, she didn't. We learn how inaccuracies propagate in credit reports because no one is incentivized to correct them, and how the public criminal justice system is being used as an arm of the debt collection industry to force people to pay on these inaccurate claims. We also learn how the increasing use of credit reports as credentials for things like apartment rental and employment mean that the inequities of the debt industry are being compounded by the increasing use of debt as a proxy for civic worthiness.
