The label "Hamburger Schule" (School of Hamburg) was given to a couple of bands playing the St.Pauli alternative clubs of Hamburg in the early 1990s.While there wasn´t a significant "sound" to trademark the scene what linked all those bands together was the use of german lyrics (at least most of the time).Lyrics and the content of the songs were very important and people like Jochen Distelmeyer (Blumfeld) were celebrated by the indie press as Erneuerer of german pop - much to his disliking.
The small "L´Age D´Or" (LADO) label became synonymous with the scene as most of its artists were part of the LADO roster. Bands like Blumfeld, Die Sterne or Tocotronic influenced a whole wave of new bands singing in german which nowadays isn´t as uncommon as it was back then. This is a feature of interview snippets by Hamburger Schule hipsters taped from tv documentaries and put together with some great tunes from 1990-1995. Have fun.
