Our latest mix is a swampy slice of cramped electronic nirvana by Patten, whose GLAQJO XAACSSO is one of the most promising electronic albums we’ve heard this year.
Released on No Pain in Pop, GLAQJO doesn’t yet present Patten as the finished article, but some of its tracks – which recall mid-’90s Warp-style electronica, the weirdest corners of the modern house spectrum, and at times classic shoegaze – are absolutely glorious. As Steve Shaw put it in his FACT review, it “presents a particular kind of unbridled, frenzied passion” that’s thin on the ground these days. In a strange way, Patten’s FACT mix plays out like an extension of the album: there’s no Patten tracks present, but everything here – from the quasi-surf rock of ’88 Pixies to the vaudeville sex house of Bakey USTL’s ‘A Tender Places’, via Autechre, Seefeel and more – has been heavily layered, cramped and compressed into Patten’s particular sound world, and sounds all the more thrilling for it.
