When there's the worst of humanity being seen on screen, it often helps to contrast the horror with beautiful music, to make it somehow palatable. And when the battle is over and you're surveying the destruction, there's no other mood that will do except sad and heart-wrenching. They say a war every decade or so keeps the US economy going. Whether that's true or not, it definitely helps the movie industry, and the constant flow of great war films and their scores could well be the one truly good thing about war.
