Slow-motion replays are always better with music, and the coach's speech at half-time wouldn't have the same effect if the score didn't accompany the cheering and clapping at the end. Sports films can be so emotional and inspiring that they appeal to those with no interest in the sports concerned. You need a likeable underdog, you need an inspiring coach, and you need a great theme.
